People to people – Barbados

The International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute (IBWPPI) conducted a meaningful and deeply restorative People to People journey to Barbados with a small delegation that included Dr. Coralie Adderley, Dr. Belinda Savage-Edwards, Dr. Ted Savage, and Ms. Debra Thompson. This intimate 7 days trip was designed around the theme “Rest to Be Ready,” giving leaders space to breathe, reflect, and strengthen their capacity to serve in a complex and uncertain global landscape.
The experience began in Historic Bridgetown, where a local people’s tour offered an engaging introduction to Barbados’ rich cultural and political history. Through stories of resilience, community, and identity, the group gained a deeper appreciation for the island’s legacy and its significance to the African diaspora. This grounding perspective shaped the tone of the trip, one of reverence, connection, and clarity.
A standout highlight of the journey was being hosted by a community of African American women expats thriving in Barbados. These professional women, living at peace while working virtually, opened their homes and hearts to the delegation. Their stories reflected courage, reinvention, and the power of choosing wellness over stress. Their hospitality created a powerful sisterhood moment, reminding everyone of the possibilities available when Black women carve out spaces that honor their joy and brilliance.
The delegation also met with local Black women leaders, community organizers, and entrepreneurs whose work uplifts women and girls across the island. These conversations revealed shared values and opened opportunities for future collaboration, particularly around IBWPPI’s ongoing efforts to build the Black Women’s Embassy and expand its global impact.
Amid these enriching exchanges, the trip held true to its purpose: rest and renewal. Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, from lush gardens to dramatic coastlines, the travelers found quiet moments for spiritual reflection, healing, and gratitude. Whether during private prayer, relaxed meals, cultural performances, or the serene sail along the west coast, each woman experienced a soft reset that strengthened her inner capacity for leadership.
By the end of the journey, the delegation returned home renewed, clear-minded, and inspired. The Barbados experience reaffirmed IBWPPI’s mission to transform the world through Acts of Kindness and good public policy and demonstrated once again how global sisterhood can offer the restoration and strength needed to continue the work ahead. IBWPPI’s relationship with the women in Barbados has only just begun and will continue in March 2026 when the full board of Directors will convene for our annual retreat.
