It’s Our Season: The Crushing is Over

Dear Members, Supporters and Friends,

I read that April comes from the Latin verb aperire, which means, “to open.” I love the month of April, for many reasons, one being that it is the beginning of Springtime when the flowers and trees are in full bloom. For that to happen seeds had to have been planted long before. That is the metaphor I will use for this month’s reflection on the rich tapestry of our organization’s history. It is important to recognize the pivotal moments that have shaped IBWPPI’s journey. One such moment occurred in 1991 when I met the esteemed Dr. Dorothy I. Height—a meeting that would leave an indelible mark on our collective story.

In 1991, 33 years ago, and coincidentally, I was a 33-year-old passionate advocate for social change and empowerment, my husband Stanley Perkins, introduced me to Dr. Height, a titan in the realm of civil rights and women's empowerment. Dr. Height's visionary leadership and unwavering dedication ignited a fire within me, inspiring me to embark on a transformative journey of service and community building.

Fast forward to today, our organization stands tall as a beacon of hope and progress, thanks to the guiding principles instilled by Dr. Height. As we celebrate our 17th year, it's imperative that we honor her legacy by continuing to champion the causes she held dear advocating for the rights and empowerment of black women worldwide.

In this spirit, we are reminded of the importance of sharing Dr. Height's history and legacy with the International Black Women's Public Policy Institute. As stewards of her vision, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that her story resonates with each member, inspiring us to carry forward the torch of progress and equality.

Let us recommit ourselves to the ideals of service, leadership, and community that Dr. Height exemplified. Together, we can honor her memory by continuing to build a world where every black woman's voice is heard, and every dream is within reach.

With gratitude and determination,

Barbara A. Perkins,

Co-Founder/President and CEO

We See You Awards International

IBWPPI’s Whirlwind of Success: A Global ImpactIt has truly been an exhilarating time for IBWPPI, filled with achievements and forward momentum. Following the highly successful We See You Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., the organization continues to uplift and support remarkable women through essential projects and initiatives. These include raising vital funds for our Birthing Center in Ghana, establishing the next cohort of Global Leaders for the Dorothy Irene Height Global Leadership Academy, expanding the Global Reading Room initiative, and advancing policy work aimed at improving the lives of women and girls both in the U.S. and globally.

We were honored to spend time with our past and present honorees, including the incredible Brigadier General Terrence Adams. Their inspiring stories and leadership continue to motivate us in our mission.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors, board members, advisors, and supporters. Your contributions make our work possible!

As part of the People to People travel initiative, President Perkins traveled to South Africa, while I had the privilege of traveling to Egypt and the UAE. I feel truly blessed to work for an organization with mission-driven leaders who allow us to make a positive impact—not only on the organization but on the world.

Together, we are creating lasting change. Thank you for being a part of it!

We See You Awards International Cont’d

When I think about the 2024, We See You Awards International, presented by IBWPPI, I simply smile and think to myself, we outdid ourselves again! Having had the 2023 Awards at the Kennedy Center, we knew it would be difficult to beat. There are so many things that I can say about this year’s event; however, the acceptance speeches from the honorees stick out the most. Maybe it was the timing of what’s about to happen in November, I’m not sure. Each recipient’s speech was in alignment, and I know they weren’t choreographed. I found myself almost mesmerized as they spoke about the importance of the work IBWPPI and Black women do.

I also particularly loved the intimacy of the restaurant, and the performances of the Mime were essentially the icing on the cake. This event showed us all that attention to detail is what it takes to have a successful event, big or small.

16th Annual Policy Forum

Annual Public Policy Forum in Washington, DC.

The 16th Annual IBWPPI Public Policy Forum, held at the prestigious National Press Club, was a highly significant event. With the theme “Our Power, Our Issues, and Our Demands,” this annual gathering has consistently elevated issues related to women and girls since 2009. It has been a beacon of hope for women and girls worldwide, amplifying their voices and addressing their concerns.

With IBWPPI’s five strategic pillars, health and wellness, education, economic security, violence against women, and human trafficking, as a themed backdrop, the event convened some of the best thought leaders in the world to share their thoughts and visions on the impact their work is having on women and girls. The annual forum brought together diverse stakeholders, fostering collaboration and collective problem-solving. The speakers included Letetia Jackson, State Convener of the South Alabama Black Women’s Roundtable; Katherine Smith, Partner and Lead Strategist with the Katherine B. Smith Agency; Carmen James Randolph, Founding President and CEO of the Women’s Foundation of the South; Teresa Thomas-Smith, Mayor of the City of Palmetto, Georgia; and Waikinya J.S. Clanton, Mississippi State Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

IBWPPI has been at the forefront of addressing systemic inequalities faced by women and girls. Our annual forums provide a platform to discuss these disparities and develop targeted strategies to address them. Increasing awareness has led to more informed decisions and advocacy through these efforts.

IBWPPI’s annual forums also serve as networking opportunities, connecting advocates, organizations, and leaders dedicated to promoting women’s and girls’ rights and well-being, which amplify efforts and facilitate resource sharing.

IBWPPI’s unwavering commitment to driving progress for women and girls is evident in its focused efforts. The organization will continue to evaluate inclusive policies and ensure that the unique needs of this demographic are comprehensively and effectively addressed.

Breaking Barriers… Shattering GLASS CEILINGS

The term “glass ceiling” refers to an invisible barrier that women and people of color encounter, hindering their advancement beyond a certain level within an organization or industry.

In recognition of Vice President Kamala Harris’s groundbreaking achievement in breaking a critical glass ceiling, IBWPPI is excited to offer new members a unique gift: a glass ceiling lapel pin. People To People South Africa

I want to express my deep appreciation to People to People South Africa for organizing and planning an unforgettable trip to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. Being part of such a well-crafted experience was an honor and a privilege. The trip surpassed my expectations from the moment we arrived at every site we visited. Each detail was thoughtfully executed, from the accommodations to the enriching cultural experiences.

President Barbara Perkins, as always, demonstrated her remarkable commitment to excellence, ensuring every element was ideally in place. Whether it was the pre-trip meetings, the impeccable coordination with Awuku as our chaperon, the seamless work of the travel agency, or the insightful tour guides, Barbara’s leadership shone through. The warm reception, dinners at the two homes of her member and associate, and every personal touch made this journey not only memorable but life-enhancing. I am deeply grateful to Barbara and her team for providing me with such a transformative and cherished experience.

This trip to South Africa has enriched my knowledge and touched my heart and will forever hold a special place in my heart. The lasting impact of this journey is a testament to its enduring value. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of something so extraordinary.

Love you, Barbara Perkins!

The Motherland called the 2024 People 2 People trip to South Africa. Very early, we travelers forged a strong familial bond that I dare say, will be lifelong. In South Africa, all of God’s creation shines brightly in the awe-inspiring & expansive landscape and even more in the exuberant & spirited “WELCOME HOME” greetings from native “family members”. The shopping, the food, the sights, the sounds, the culture, the “hustle” (yes, wegot it honest), and most importantly, the love pleasantly overwhelmed me. Since returning, I’ve awakened each morning longing to be back there, with my people, immersed in my culture, back HOME!

Tammy M. Wilder, Esq.

The trip to South Africa with IBWPPI-People to People … Travelers was a splendid opportunity. One that for me was both eye opening and mind expanding!!! It changed my perspective on so many things and provided me a chance to get immersed into the South African Culture.. To I was able to enjoy it immensely and to get a Taste of how others live. To witness the differences; and experience similarities.

Love you, Barbara Perkins!

WOW! Words are really not enough to describe the awesome, spirit filled, rewarding, informational, and exciting experiences I felt and shared with the amazing group of individuals. Some I knew and some I just met, however, the love and warmth I felt seems like I have known each of you forever. I thank God for the opportunity He afforded me to be a part of such an amazing trip gathered with amazing and loving people all around.

As I always say, nothing happens by chance, every experience in our lives are orchestrated and designed by God. For Such A Time As This, I pray that God will continue to “Order My Steps” and allow for many more collaborations and fellowship.

The People to People trip sponsored by the International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute is not just a cultural trip but a family cultural experience.

I have participated in the trip every year with my teenage daughter, and it gets better and better every year. Not only is the trip a way to reconnect spiritually and culturally with the motherland, but it has also been a way to build community with like-minded African Americans who understand our role in building international relationships.

This year’s trip to South Africa was transformational. We were able to see the beauty of the land, learn more about the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and other South African leaders, and give back to local charities that center the empowerment of women and children.

This trip has become an annual mother-daughter trip for me and my daughter, and sharing this experience with her has given us both a deeper understanding of purpose and legacy.

Thank you to President Barbara Perkins and the IBWPPI family for curating this extraordinary opportunity, and I look forward to taking this journey with you every year,

Tameika Devine

Ted and Belinda Edwards thoroughly enjoyed our recent trip to South Africa with the People to People travel group. The journey was not only an opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of South Africa but also to immerse ourselves in the country’s rich and complex history. From learning about Nelson Mandela’s legacy to visiting key historical sites, every moment of the trip was filled with insight and inspiration.

What made the experience even more meaningful was the strong bond that formed among the group members. Most of us started the adventure as strangers, but by the end, we had grown into a close-knit family, sharing unforgettable memories and heartfelt moments. The warmth, camaraderie, and shared experiences created lifelong connections, and we are already eagerly looking forward to our next great adventure with our new family. The trip to South Africa will forever hold a special place in our hearts as a truly transformative and enriching experience.

Thank you, President Perkins and the entire IBWPPI team!

Who Are We?

Our Vision is to connect and advocate for Black women globally through acts of kindness and public policy. Our Mission is to work in the US and internationally to convene hearings and discussions to evaluate the impact of current public policies and to initiate new policies that address the major threats to the well-being of Black women and our families.

Our programs reflect the policy work we are engaged in daily. We believe that our policy focus informs our programs.
