Dear Members and Friends of IBWPPI,

June has been an exceptionally busy and rewarding month for all of us at IBWPPI, marking the pinnacle of our organization’s activity for the year. This month concluded the final phase of our six-month Global Leadership Academy training with a series of significant events.

One of the highlights was the graduation of the 4th cohort of the Dorothy I. Height Global Leadership Academy. The celebration included the "Seat at the Table" event, where graduates were invited to engage in high-level discussions with diplomats, ambassadors, and other global leaders. These meetings provided invaluable opportunities for our graduates to share their work and learn about new prospects.

This year’s cohort had the distinct honor of meeting with Ambassador Katherine Tai, the U.S. Trade Representative and a member of President Biden’s cabinet. The Solidarity Center graciously hosted this event for the second consecutive year. Additionally, the graduates engaged in a private conversation with Dr. Elsie Scott and CEO Ann Cunningham, enriching their experience and insights.

The graduation ceremony itself was held at the African Union Embassy, featuring Ambassador Hilda Suka-Mafudze as the keynote speaker. It was a momentous occasion, attended both virtually and in person by graduates from five different countries. The weekend in Washington, D.C., was a powerful and exciting time for our organization, our graduates, and their families.

Through this intergenerational program, we are building a deep bench of domestic and global leaders, committed to preserving our history, culture, art, and innovation. With 69 women having graduated from this program over the past four years, we are beginning to see the profound impact as our graduates take on leadership roles with a focus on global affairs.

We are immensely proud of our graduates and look forward to continuing our mission of empowering women and fostering leadership on the world stage.

Open Letter to Mrs. Delerice Mackey, affectionately known as Ms. Dela

Sincerely,

Who Are We?

Our Vision is to connect and advocate for Black women globally through acts of kindness and public policy. Our Mission is to work in the US and internationally to convene hearings and discussions to evaluate the impact of current public policies and to initiate new policies that address the major threats to the well-being of Black women and our families.

Our programs reflect the policy work we are engaged in daily. We believe that our policy focus informs our programs.

Where can you see yourself?

The Birthing Initiative aims to reduce maternal deaths and address Period Poverty, ensuring girls can participate in daily activities without hindrance. Being strong advocates for birthing centers and birthing services in the rural south and on the continent of Africa.

The Boots on the Ground Initiative provides essential foot covering to communities affected by hurricanes and floods preventing waterborne diseases. Also, provide footwear for women who farm and provide food for their families. We also provide disaster relief and resources to families negatively impacted by natural disasters both at home in the US and abroad.

Women’s Economic Empowerment Micro Loan Program supports entrepreneurs in Haiti and Ghana, supporting local businesses and creating a sustainable system of economic empowerment for rural communities.

The Reading Room Initiative establishes spaces for children to read and dream, with centers in the Bahamas, Kumasi, Ghana, and Belize. We provide inspiring books, for example, Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” adapted for children, and introductory educational materials on Climate Change.

Dorothy I. Height Global Leadership Academy prepares the next generation of global leaders and advocates for their deployment into non-traditional spaces. The world needs prepared leaders more than ever and our six-month global leadership development program answers the call. In less than four years we have trained over sixty new international leaders and have facilitated their international engagement.
