Katherine B. Smith has served her country for more than three decades.

Most recently she served as President of the Senate of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas until November 30th, 2019.  She currently serves as Managing Director of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority.  A new Authority established to lead the reconstruction efforts in the Northern Bahamas after the aftermath of hurricane Dorian.  This devastating category 5 storm was the worst natural disaster the island nation has ever suffered.   The reported estimated damages is $3.4 billion dollars.

In addition to her demonstrated commitment to public service, she has a diverse background with significant leadership experience in the private sector. She has held senior management positions in Public Relations and Marketing, Corporate Affairs, Human Resources and Training, Hotel Operations, and Business and Economic Development.

Katherine is Founder and Chairman of the GirlCon Organization. The group focuses on mentoring teenage girls and young women and lives by its mission to “advocate for, inspire and empower girls to be more,” with a vision  to ensure “that every girl is valued and empowered to live a life without limits.”

She has a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Learning and Leadership (OLL) from Barry University, Miami, Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Management from DeVry University, Magna Cum Laude, Atlanta, Georgia.

More about Katherine Smith

Smith first served in the Senate in 2001.  Her appointment was part of the historic achievement of gender equality in the make-up of the Senate.  She was again appointed to the Senate in 2007.  In 2009, Senator Smith represented The Bahamas as its first Consul General with responsibilities for the South Eastern United States.  Prior to that, she served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister Freeport, Grand Bahama with responsibility for Bahamas Information Service, the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas and had administrative oversight of the Office of The Prime Minister on Grand Bahama.  She is a former Local Government Councilor for the High Rock Constituency; has served as a member of the Board of the Public Hospitals Authority and served as Chairman of its Human Resources Committee.  She is a Past President of the Free National Movement Women’s Association of Grand Bahama.
